This memorandum is designed to guide the direction and governance of the organization.
The official name of the organization is International Jesuit Association of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Universities and Schools. The acronym ISJACHEM will be used where appropriate.
The mission of the ISJACHEM is to enhance knowledge among the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Universities and High Technical Schools of the Jesuits, and to increase collaboration in all fields in order to improve our preparation of professionals in the field of chemistry, environmental studies and related subjects.
Our vision is to set a network of institutions committed to education in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering that is designed to prepare men and women for the world with humane, social, spiritual and moral perspectives according to Jesuit values. We will also emphasize pastoral attention to the students and to the different groups of people with which we work.
Our goals are four-fold:
- through every means of cooperation, we desire to serve better our students, faculty and other constituents as we do our work as educators in the field of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering within the context of Ignatian education.
- to develop and promote Chemistry and Chemical Engineering as professions and vocations in our various societies and countries.
- in solidarity with each other, as well as with the poor, we will work to prepare young men and women who are committed to the development of Third World Countries, as well as to those who are marginalized in the First World. Through education in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, it is our goal to serve justice and to take care of environment, by the work of our students and ourselves.
- to support and facilitate the on-going professional development and education of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering professionals, faculty and others in the context of Christian Social Thought and Ignatian education.
The membership of ISJACHEM will be for the representatives (Dean, Director, Chair of the Department, etc.) of the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programs of the Jesuit Institutions, or the person designated by the them.
General Council
All members of ISJACHEM are part of the General Council.
The General Council will have an annual meeting (ISJACHEM Congress), to establish the directions of the association and to elect the next meeting hostess Institution and to elect the new Executive Committee members.
Executive Committee
The principal function of Executive Committee is to direct the ISJACHEM, working within the general policies and directions established and approved by the General Council.
Executive Committee will be composed by a President, a Vice President, the Immediate Past President, an Executive Director, the Education Secretary of the Jesuit Curia and at least four other members that represent each continent, if possible.
The funding to attend Executive Committee meetings, or other meetings, is the responsibility of each member.
BOARD
Members of the Board shall include the President, Vice President, Immediate Past President and Executive Director.
OFFICERS
President
Shall chair the Executive Committee and the annual meeting of ISJACHEM. He/she will be part of the next Executive Committee and Board.
Vice President
Shall be responsible of organizing the annual meeting of ISJACHEM. He/she will be designated by the annual meeting hostess Institution and will be the next President.
Former President
Shall assist the President with subjects worked on in the past year.
Executive Director
Shall be responsible for day-to-day operations of ISJACHEM and execute the directions established by the Executive Committee or Board.
Secretary of Education - Jesuit Curia
The secretary of Education of the Jesuit Curia shall be an advisor.
Committee members representing each continent
Members that represent each continent will be collaborators and advisors
The President, Vice President and Former President shall serve as members of the Executive Committee for a three year period, starting the cycle on the first of August as Vice President.
The Members representatives of different continents shall serve for a period of two years. Each year half of them will be elected among the Institutions that booked their intention, by letter, e-mail or fax, sent to the President by May 31st.
In the year 2001 will be elected the representatives of EUROPE and LATIN AMERICA.
In the year 2002 will be elected the representatives of ASIA and USA.
The executive Director will be elected for a period of four years, among the candidates that booked their intention (same procedure as above). The first election will take place in the year 2002.
The place of next year’s annual meeting of ISJACHEM will be elected among the institutions that booked their intention (same procedure as above).
The Board can make recommendation that should be approved by the General Council, if the Vice President can’t be selected normally
The Association shall be established officially in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil. Establishing financial policies and fees for the annual meeting of ISJACHEM are responsibilities of the Executive Committee.
